The rot hairs provide a large surface for water absorption. The cell sap in the vacuoles of the root hair is usually more concentrated than the soil solution. This difference in concentration causes the water from the soil it enters the vacuoles by osmosis. The cell membrane of the root hair cell is partially permeable. In this way the cell sap of the root hair becomes less concentrated than the neighboring ones so osmosis continues through the cells of the root until it reaches the root system.

Sometimes the soil solution is more concentrated to prevent the loss of water from the roots and also to absorb water from the soil energy is used up to force water from the soil to flow into transport .Energy is obtained by oxidation of glucose.
