well...we would like to know whether this is a GP title from Cambridge. I doubt it. It seems more of a title for newspapers than a scholarly article. However, we will still try to give you our views on it.

As usual, to gain maximum marks, you should talk on both sides. However, for this one, the advantages clearly outweigh the disadvantages.

"ecotourism offers market-linked long-term solutions to some of the most important challenges of our time. By providing effective economic incentives for conserving and enhancing bio-cultural diversity, ecotourism helps protect the natural and cultural heritage of our beautiful planet."

"We believe that true ecotourism protects local cultures and empowers local and Indigenous peoples - while providing visitors with unique opportunities to learn about the community they visit and contribute to its success."
Kores Ole Musuni, Maasai Cross Cultural and Ecotourism Programs

It is not ethical to copy other websites' content and paste it as our own, this is why we prefer to give links. These links are extremely relevant to your query.

Hi Sheren,

There are many advantages and disadvantages of ecotourism.

As tutor has mentioned, there are many more advantages of ecotourism than disadvantages. Unfortunately, ecotourism is still a new field of study and a new sub sector of the tourism industry. And, with most new found industries, many organizations, companies, and countries are taking advantage of it.

Eco tourism if done right, will help the environment, preserve natural resources as well as help the local communities and economies. Ecotourism is an industry that stands to make a lot of money from tourists that are seeking environmentally friendly vacations or ecologically friendly activities. The money from ecotourism could be used to preserve nature, wildlife, species and earth's natural resources as well as help local people with access to civilization and education.

This, however, usually does not happen in reality because the locals rarely benefit from the growth of their economy. The investors and foreign corporations do. And the environment and natural resources rarely get preserved because they are worth more in a theme park attracting ecotourists.

Below are some points and ideas which might help you:

Advantages: - in case the site is well managed

    * has minimal impact on the environment
    * builds awareness and respect for the local culture and environment
    * offers positive experiences for all
    * employs and benefits local people
    * educates visitors by an on-site visit about the local political, social and environmental issues.
    * Money from the tourists go back into the conservation of the area.
    * A wildlife habitat, for example, is protected
    * Visitors carry new ideas back to influence their own environment

  Disadvantages: - badly managed site

    * overcrowding constructions
    * pollution of the habitat
    * unlimited numbers of tourists
    * The site becoming a "honey pot" area. The site becomes over-visited.
    * Traffic congestion
    * Footpath erosion, soil loss
    * Tourists don't understand or care what Ecotourism really is

Also, it is worth mentioning that if an Ecotourism site is properly managed, many of the disadvantages will not appear  Wink
