Hello, this question of yours is very broad.
Ideas how to write such an essay.
In the introduction, you should mention some facts about Mauritius: small island, part of African region, pillars of the economy, boom in the BPO sector, no natural resources, etc.
Now, it is important that you try to explain the term 'world event' because literally speaking a world event is any event that is happening outside the Republic of Mauritius. In your body you must give examples of world events which can have a direct effect on the economy of Mauritius. Examples could be selected from:
(a) the 2010 FIFA World Cup is expected to have a very positive effect on the economy of Mauritius. Since Mauritius is quite near to South Africa, it is believed that many people would be interested to come to Mauritius for some holidays even whole football teams. This would surely help our National Airline which is expecting some Rs4 billions less in revenues that last year.
(b) the price of oil keeps changing on the international market, every month the Automatic Pricing Mechanism (APM) fixes the new price of gasoline and diesel for the month.
(c) a football match between liverpool and manchester can have 25% of the Mauritian population glued to their TV set thereby creating a kind of loneliness on the streets, supermarkets or even at work.
(d) Mauritius exports about 505,000 tons of raw sugar to the European Union under a
preferential trade arrangement
, about 30,000 tons to the United States and some 54,000 tons of other kinds of sugar products to buyers in European countries. However, this agreement will change as from next year where there will be a decrease of 36% in the price of sugar that we export to the European Union.
(e) the BPO sector is currently in full bloom, many of the offshore companies are from France. They are currently in Mauritius because of cheap labour and because some of our people are good in speaking French. If in a few years, it happens one of the french-speaking African countries can create something like a Cybercity with good networking infrastructure, BPO companies will not think twice to move their operations there (this is what happened with the textile industry in Mauritius) because the cost of labour will be even much lower.
(f) Social networks and international websites... facebook, google, yahoo,...
Some events which might not have direct effect on the economy of Mauritius are:
(i) war in Iraq or Afghanistan, this is my personal opinion, as far as I know, this world event do not affect Mauritius directly.
(ii) Obama becoming new president of USA
(iii) New scientific discovery in Quantum Computing!
(iv) Wimbledon Tennis Tournament (effect might not be significant) or perhaps Tour de France
(v) Air Crash in Florida!
(vi) Gunmen killing 10 persons in some village in Honolulu
(vii) Festival des Cannes
etc...
Conclusion
Mauritius being a small island is not immune to many world events. Mauritius imports most of its products for consumption making it very vulnerable to price changes in the international market. However, the small size and small population is also a boon which is allowing us to face the financial crisis which is actually shaking some of the greatest economies of the world. Our small size enables us to adapt easily to changes in the external environment. Mauritius has recently introduced the concept of 'ile-durable' which covers aspects like self-sufficiency in energy. This would us less susceptible to changes in the price of oil on the international market.

Hello Shina,
Is a natural calamity a world event? Since there is no formal definition of the term world event, we cannot say that you are wrong. For some good examples of world events, visit
http://www.worldeventsguide.com
.
Our tutor will give you his views on how natural calamities can affect Mauritius very soon and also some ideas about a possible food crisis.
However, we are sorry to disappoint you in that we do not normally write specimen essays for students. The essays that are found in this website have been contributed by students (mainly laureates and those who were ranked after them or those who got A in GP).
Regards
Project Coordinator
