science which studies human behaviour as a relationship between ends and scarce means which have alternative uses.
Thus the basic concern of economics is the pattern of allocation of scarce resources which can be used in various ways.
The basic economic problem arises because
man WANTS are unlimited and
the MEANS available to satisfy these wants
are themselves
limited.
